windsor rocking chair

Item Ref

A lovely example of a late 18th / early 19th Century Windsor armchair.
Made probably in birch, and originally stained and “varnished” to resemble a mahogany finish.
Construction is very similar to other “early” examples, with through tenon joints to arms and legs.
Slab saddle seat.
Splat back within spindles.
Showing both Westountry and Thames Valley design characteristics.
Rockers are a later....(but not much!) addition, in mahogany.
Groove in one of the arms is not a repaired split.
Gap in the back of arms is just where the joint has opened in time.
Measurements are maximum ones.
