MAHOGANY GRANDFATHER CLOCK BY JONAS POLLARD OF CREDITON
English West Country mahogany longcase (grandfather) clock with eight day movement, high tide at Plymouth and moonphase dial, by a member of this well-documented family of Devon clockmakers.

Standing 91 inches high excluding the finials, the elegant late Georgian period figured case has reeded hood columns, and a nice restrained combination of satinwood decoration and boxwood stringing. Complete and original from the three carved finials to the bracket feet.

The silvered brass dial is engraved in the West Country manner and is exceptionally fine. The signature “Jonas Pollard – Crediton” appears in a banner across the dial. The arch is engraved for the age of the moon and ‘High Tide at Plymouth’, the aspect of the moon is displayed between engraved globes with the signs of the Zodiac. The movement is fully overhauled, regulated and covered by a 12 month guarantee.

This extremely rare clock was made circa 1795. At around this time, Jonas would have been completing his apprenticeship to his father. The inclusion of a tidal and moonphase dial meant that this was either an important commission for wealthy customer or possibly Jonas’ ‘masterpiece’.

About The Maker

Jonas Pollard b. 1773 m. 1806 d. 1835 of Crediton (Devon) was the son of clockmaker John Pollard also of Crediton. In his Will he made provision for 13 children. An interesting notice appears in the Exeter Flying Post 16 December 1824 “inhabitants of West Town of Crediton are much indebted to the public spirit of Mr Jonas Pollard, Clockmaker and Ironmonger of that place – who has, at his own expense, fixed up a neat clock with the dial against the front of this house, facing the market place which is a great accommodation to the public”.

Several other members of the family are recorded working in Crediton, Exeter and Plymouth Dock (Devonport).

The price includes delivery (mainland England/Wales), setting-up and 12 months guarantee.

MAHOGANY GRANDFATHER CLOCK BY WILLIAM CUFF OF SHEPTON MALLET
A fine Regency period mahogany longcase (grandfather) clock of eight day duration.

The mahogany case is of very small size and displays many of the features of the best West Country clocks of the period. The marquetry and parquetry inlay to the door and base; the reeded hood columns with Corinthian capitals, and the use of ebonised moulding to the trunk corners and base panels are all pleasing features. As is the wavy shaped hood door and matching back splats so typical of clocks from the West Country in general, and the Bristol area in particular. The height is 83½ inches.

The movement is of eight day duration with rack striking sounding the hours on a bell. It has been fully overhauled, regulated and is covered by a 12 month guarantee.

The time is displayed via the original matching brass hands to the delightful painted dial from the shortlived Birmingham dialmakers firm of Wilkes & Baker. The age of the moon is shown in the arch, the rosy-cheeked moons rolling away to reveal a shipping scene to one side and a rural scene to the other. A subsidiary seconds dial, date aperture and the signature "Cuff - Shepton Mallett" complete a most charming dial.

The condition is exemplary. Restoration is limited to the bracket feet and old repairs are evident to the hood. An agreeable and very honest clock.

The price includes delivery (mainland England/Wales), setting-up and 12 months guarantee.

Height 83½ inches
Width 20 inches
